My Cleveland Recap

12/18/07

Sorry, these are blurry. If there is an opposite of Clack Goddess, I am it.

note: This is already posted on the boards. I am just saving it here. My Cleveland recap:

It was great. Clay has lost a lot of weight since last summer. His hair is reddish brown and he is wearing the glasses. He wore the dark suit with a regular coat and not the long black one. What I want to say is this. Jesse Vargas is a genius. I LOVED the musical arrangement of the show. Add Clay's vocal interpretations and you have magic. Oh Holy Night with Jesu, Joy of Man's Desiring mixed in was awesome. The jazz medly was wonderful. I wasn't bored from a musical standpoint at all! Clay talks like like he is on a timer for his introductions of the show and the performers. He stays in the middle of the stage but entrance is still dramatic because he appears from nowhere and comes up in the middle of the stage. He sounds good, for the most part. I felt that he was strong and rich vocally. I heard a lot of the wonderful low notes and a variety of colors tonight. I loved it. He was only a bit ragged in brief spots that seem to be where he changes vocal register from the mid to high range. Quiana looked gorgeous and sang well. She got a lot of love from the audience. Clay announced that they missed Angela and explained that she was gone due to a death in the family and they hoped to have her back one of these days but he didn't give a specific date for her return. His DSIAFCD went well. The audience jumped to their feet and cheered loudly. He had a very pleased look on his face and big ole grin. He came back for the AIW encore. It was VERY dramatic. He has taken his jacket off for the last two numbers and has a vest on. On the last note of AIW, he belts it just as a starburst of light from multiple lights hit him as the stage itself goes dark. It is a very cool effect. He didn't hold it out all night but he hit it. He had a lot of power in his voice. He tends to over load the sound system sometimes. I just have to say again how much I liked this concert from the standpoint of the musical arrangements and interpretations by Jesse, Clay and Quiana. Well done. Bravo! All of the songs were somewhat varied from the usual versions even from Clay's usual versions. It seemed like it went very fast. A word about the stories. They were well chosen. They were funny and sad and the readers should be very proud of their well told stories. I thank them for sharing them with us. I think it came off very well. No, it wasn't the banter and joking Clay of the summer. It was a different sort of concert. It was just right for the Christmas season and I would go see it again if I could. There were only a few ********* with flashes going off. Not too many. The clack police didn't hassle too many people that I saw. BTW, The Playhouse Square houses the State Theater which is an old, renovated theater that is really quite lovely. It wasn't as full as the venue I saw Clay in last year but it was still a pretty good crowd considering that it was Monday night, the weather was awful and there seemed to be little to no publicity. It was also the last concert announced like it was sort of an afterthought. Even the mod at the OFC didn't put up a sticky right away. The crowd that was there seemed to be mostly Clay fans. I bought one of the scarves. It is red and very soft.I had good seats but I wasn't close enough for good pictures. I took a few seconds of video in order to see if I could get a picture from it without it being blurry because it was dark and Clay is always moving. I was also scared to death that my stupid flash would go off. The tape I used to cover it didn't work too well. If I get anything at all, I will post it here but don't count on it. BTW, my daughter mentioned how much she liked Sean's contributions at drums. It definitely adds a spark to the orchestral arrangements. Of course, he is behind the screen but he was wonderful. At the end, just before DSIAFCD, Clay was going to let Quiana give the final comments that he always gives about not saving it all for Chrismtas etc. She tries to give a couple of general comments but she doesn't reallyl remember his exact speech so he takes over. It was rather funny. I know that not everyone will care for the style of this show and I would say so if I really didn't like it because it wasn't funny banter Clay. I LOVED this show. It was different but it was classy and appropriate for the season and if I didn't have such old lady arms I would steal Quiana's dress. It was gorgeous!
