Godspeed, Dan Fogelberg
12/19/07
My husband and I are both Dan Fogelberg fans. I remember the first time I heard one of his songs--my freshman year in college, 1976. This little dorky guy I met, who drove a lime green Charger, played the guitar a little bit and sang a little bit. His entire repertoire was Dan Fogelberg, which at that time was Captured Angel. This little guy was so enamoured of Dan, it was so sweet, and little bit weird.
Fast forward to a couple of months ago. Jemockson was home from law school visiting for a few days. We were in the car going somewhere when "Same Auld Lang Syne" came on the radio. Now, you have to know that Jemockson is a music fan--all genres, all time periods. I think he has something like 30,000 songs on his iTunes. He's also a smart ass. Anyway, he had never heard this song before, and he thought it was the most ridiculous thing he had ever heard. He started singing his version of Same Auld Lang Syne, except it was stuff like "went to the dry cleaners and met my old school teacher, she said hoo-ooold the staaaarrrr-che." We were laughing our butts off, it was so funny and so irreverent.
Anyway, it got me to thinking and wondering whether the Dan Fogelberg fandom has snarky fans, and wondered what his sense of humor was like. Although I've been a fan of the man for 30 years, I don't know much about him. It made me realize how much laughter and joy I've gotten from this fandom, and how much I appreciate Clay's wacked-out sense of humor.
I'll miss Dan. He had a very sweet and poetic voice. Although his drawing on Captured Angel always creeped me out a little bit. Heh.
RIP Dan.
