(5) I learnt a lot of information about Clay through the NCA site. He is a 28 year-old who was born and raised in Raleigh,North Carolina. He is a Southern Baptist. His eyes are green, and his original hair color is red. He is allergic to coffee, chocolate, shellfish, tree nuts, mushrooms and mints. He has two dogs. His height is 6'1,his foot size is 34cms.He has currently sold more than 6 million albums. Before American Idol,he worked at the YMCA. Also,he was a substitute teacher for students with autism at an elementary school. He founded the Bubel/Aiken Foundation which supports the integration of children with disabilities into the life environment of their non-disabled peers. He accepted a UNICEF ambassadorship in 2005,and in 2007 was appointed by George W. Bush to a committee of the Department of Health and Human Services on matters relating to programs and services for persons with intellectual disabilities. Through the AI audition, his looks were remarkably improved. After he was selected for the best 12,hair and fashion experts transformed him.Right after AI,he was puzzled at his new state.I could see him on the Oprah Winfrey Show, and he was excited. On the TV show "The View",he was confused at his fans screaming. He looked charmingly naive. One year later,in 2004,his look had changed into a more mature one. Moreover,he seemed to be accepting his status as a celebrity. That's just a phenomenon of reality TV shows!

I have drawn myself into this young singer little by little. One of the crucial steps was to know his transformation throughout and after AI. As I mentioned before, his face has changed rapidly. I could trace his biography and his journey through material online and his book.

It is more moving and interesting to document a person's real life than fiction. The reason is obvious. People want to experience the joys and sorrows of each other's life through the media. Then,TV producers have a gimmick to make a person's life full of ups and downs a more dramatic one. Moreover, they broadcast a documentary film to get high audience ratings. It seems there is no meaning to criticisms such as"prearranged performance"or "manipulation of information" in this phenomenon.

In The Truman Show(1998 movie, directed by Peter Weir, and starring Jim Carrey),this ironic social phenomenon is depicted well.In this story, one person's whole life is made to profit the media industry. His entire life becomes the target of public curiosity. Truman lives in a constructed reality soap opera, televised 24 hours a day to millions across the globe. But he does not know that. People consume his experiences and his real life. This work describes the mercilessness of show business. In the latter part, Truman asks the TV producer of his TV program, "Who are you?" "I am a creator...of a TV program," the producer answered. Although this film is a SF film taking place in the future,I know it is an ongoing event in the US,Japan, and other advanced societies. I use this film in my sociology lecture.

Clay Aiken and the TV program "American Idol"is a most successful product which follow that trend. Clay faces a drastic change in his life, and tries to survive frantically in a heavy storm like Truman does. He has brightness and toughness to adapt himself to new circumstances. His life, suddenly becoming a star one day though he was not supposed to,is very dramatic. Clay who lives the story is too adorable to move over his role to other. He is challenging his new life by revealing his negative past in his published book. His mother and him were victims of domestic violence from his birth-father. In his childhood, he was bullied in school. Several years after his debut,he changed his look again, and revealed he suffered panic attacks for a year. Moreover, he announced his decision to move from Hollywood to his hometown of North Carolina. Through the media, the masses are eager to know his way of life. People care about him, sympathize with him, and cheer for him. And...Oh, No! Oh, my god! Now I am a part of them.
