My Psychology Professor Like Golden Girls!?!?!

08/31/09

And I thought this class would be boring! (NOT!)

When every college child begins his/her journey back into the classroom, one often hears horror stories about professors from roommates' pasts. The Nice. The Nasty. The One That Spits..who I unfortunately had once. You hear about them all. I went into my psychology class today with zero expectations...except for a few.

Mr. Jackson has a syllabus that he calls "required reading". The 13 page long (and still growing, as he said) syllabus covers every tiny detail of his class with the occasional legal disclaimer. Oh joy. So I'm reading online, flipping through this collegiate wonder when I realize how much I dislike a class I haven't even started. The man is TESTING us over his syllabus. Could it be worse? Oh yes.

Once I got in class, overheard two anorexically skinny girls chit-chatting, made a remark about how the chairs weren't comfortable but were sturdy enough to hold my fat ass, I sat down. I started looking over the syllabus hoping that some little morsel of information he had oh so carefully typed and bolded would sink into my brain.

30 minutes later, he opened his laptop, turned on his powerpoint presentation and spoke. His voice was my sigh of relief for this class. He's absolutely hilarious (and openly gay which is not something you see often in the southland) I jumped for joy. He made psychology sparkle and kept my interest (unlike a few of his monotone speaking collegues). I loved listening to everything he had to say. Out of all of my instructors, he is the most entertaining and seems to be the most passionate about what he does. Oh and something else...he doesn't see himself as an instructor. He is a self-proclaimed "facilitator of knowledge".

After showing us his powerpoint, he went on and on about his personal life. He was incredibly giddy when he started talking about his favorite TV shows. Will and Grace, Golden Girls...I wore a grin the entire hour and 30 minutes I was in his class today.

I know this is going to be a very interesting semester and I'm looking forward to every minute of it!
