WHALE RIDER!
12/18/06The other day I finally watched the movie "WHALE RIDER". Even before Clay had said in one of his interviews that he thought it was good, I had intended to watch it. Of course, Clay mentioning it gave me additional motivation to go to the video store, and check it out.
I strongly recommend this one to anybody. It's so unusual, and very poetic. When you have some time to spare during Holiday relaxation - watch it! - you won't regret it. I'm so happy that Clay liked this movie! It says something about him.
The movie shows that sometimes we can be blind, and not notice things that are right in front of us. We search far away, when what we are searching for is very close. The movie also tells us that sometimes there is such a thing as destiny, and no matter how we try to steer things different direction, what must come will come. The main character, a young girl ,endures rejection from her beloved grandfather. Yet, instinctively, not knowing it herself, she is fulfilling her own destiny.
Below is my favoite scene:
I don't want to write more, because I don't want to spoil the story for those who would like to see the movie. It's slow paced, but it kept my attention throughout, because of its dreamy atmosphere. But the fantasy like scenes were alternated with very realistic examples of the contemporary lives of Maoris in New Zealand. You'll be surprised how different, and how SIMILAR they are to people from any other part of the globe.
I read some reviews of the movie on the Internet. Somebody commented that it has a feminist agenda!! What?! I din't see that!!!
No, no. It's more about an old man, who is unable to see beyond his own stiff set of rules, and a little girl who makes him change his mind.

BTW, the young actress is now in the new movie: "The Nativity Story"
PS.I have to admit that the New Zealand accent gave me a lot of trouble, LOL!
