Auditioning for a Reality Show...
01/29/06Clay and I have a connection! I stood in line for an audition for a reality show and so did Clay!
Fortunately Clay actually got an audition - and I didn't. I stood in line for 4 hours to audition for 'The biggest loser' only to be told they didn't have time to see everyone. Oh well. It was kind of fun (other than the fact that my feet hurt!) to talk to those in line and hear their stories and their hopes and why they were there. Mostly younger (I swear I was the only grey haired one!) and very intense. One very pretty young woman was so excited. I wish she would have gotten in. I think they would have loved her. She would walk way up the line (it was very long and way more people showed up than they anticipated) and try to get info from those inside and then come back and tell everyone what was going on.
It helped pass the time in between listening to one woman chatter on about how she used to play hockey, the young guy who used to play football and drove up from Miami and works for the Dade County Medical Examiner, the pretty young woman who doesn't know what it feels like to ever be thin and watched as her Mother was able to get gastric by pass and lose 150 pounds while she couldn't because of a pre existing condition, the too thin guy who God know why he was there, and me life is not over after 50 lady with grey hair. We decided we'd make a great show just with us.
Anyway because of the this young woman's spying I actually did find out most of what 'would have' happened had I gotten an audition. They took in groups of 12. The auditions were in Jimmy Buffets' Marguaritaville restaurant. It was noisy and people had to yell to be heard. The two young women (in their 20's alternated with the groups of 12) would ask a round of questions. Why are you here, what do you want from the experience, what makes you special, etc. They spend some time with the groups. We had figured you would walk in get 10 seconds and then move on but they did spend a little more time. There was an application you filled out and a non-liability we can do anything we want with you and your story and pictures in perpetuity and make absolutely no promises agreement to sign.
After the assistant producer came out and told us they were not giving out any more applications and they were done at 4 and our chances were slim and none and they weren't going to get through even those who had applications, I decided to leave as did most everyone else who behind where they cut off the line. There were still 100-200 people in front of me. I went down to the restaurant to see if I could just see what was going on before I left. Of couse they were not letting just anyone into the restaurant  There was an officer there. I very politely asked 'Sir - where are the nearest public restrooms?' He looked me literally up and down noticing my grey hair I'm sure - determined I was not here for the show and said 'Ok you can go in' and he pointed to the restrooms. Just like I planned! Anyway while I was in there I got to see and hear first hand.
On my way back past the line of waiting hopefuls I noticed this young woman. She was still in line. She wasn't giving up. I hope she got in to see them. I wished her luck and walked no limped back to my car parked at least a mile away!
I did this on a whim and did not plan. My advice if you attempt to audition for a reality show. Get there early, wear comfortable shoes, bring water, wear layers and bring a book. Obvious I know but  Apparently not to me. My only excuse is that I was headed to the Florida Clay Fans Annual get together after this experience. That party was fun. Sitting here with sore feet I'm still deciding about the audition line experience.
