Position! Position

07/18/05

You're supposed to read the title like the song Tradition from Fiddler.

Man oh man, is it humid here in New England. I'm going to Wolf Trap in August, maybe this is Mother Nature's way of getting me used to it. On the other hand, my hair does have a nice little curl to it on the edges.

On Friday, Sgt. CB called me at work to discuss his days off for the rest of the summer. Because he is on call 24x7x365, he gets lots of vacation time. Sometimes he actually gets to take it. (There haven't been a lot of dead people lately so I think he's overdue.) He asked me to review my concert plans. I tried the old "it's already on the calendar" but I think he's on to that game now.

So I reviewed the trips and I kept hearing sighs. Then he reminded me about the fact that he was going to Fenway Park on Sunday to see the Red Sox and the Yankees play. It's a bus with 25 cops and 50 cases of beer. I said "Oh, I forgot you had that trip." He then proceeded to define the difference for me between an afternoon at the ballpark vs 3 days in Vienna or 4 days driving around Eastern New England when you call something a trip. "Nice try" he said.

So he went to Fenway yesterday. The game was nationally televised on ESPN. Perhaps you saw him behind the first base side with a sign that said "Johnny Damon is great but Clay Rocks!". No, really.

Today's marketing blog word of the day is POSITION.

Position is how you want your product/service to be viewed by your market. In fact, if you are really good you can position your product/service differently to different market segments.

Team Clay tried to position Clay for multiple market segments when they put him in the teen magazines with the blond hair and then in Elle magazine looking in pre-debacle (or maybe mid-debacle) mode with the tux on the couch for the "thinking woman". Yeah, I know what I was thinking, how about you?

At the Providence JNT, I saw Amber standing backstage with her feet in second position while she waited for the time to nudge one of the readers on the stage.

One definition of position is: A strategic area occupied by members of a force. Clay makes sure everything is in the right position when he sits on the stool of seriousness in the concerts. Sometimes he has to adjust their position.

Another definition: A point of view or attitude on a certain question. Does anyone know Clay's position on LA?

I've often thought about positions with Clay. Things like Missionar….oops wrong board.
