Wolf Trap
08/09/05When Doves Cry. Wolf Trap. Clay Aiken. Angela Fisher. A bag of ice.
From what I’ve read from some fans, this was a combination that made many very upset. According to them, Clay acted like a teenager trying to fluster Angela by trying to get ice down her shirt. The descriptions, to me sounded like Clay chased Angela down during half of the song. In the process, the “mood” was spoiled. Actually, from what I heard from these fans, this whole thing started much earlier in the show – Clay and Angela were incredibly giggly during the 60s medley. It also continued after WDC throughout the rest of the show as well.
So, with trepidation, I downloaded the clips…and ended up with a big ole smile on my face. What I saw was a guy who was having fun, and a lady who was playing along with it. Also, I felt their enjoyment – and I wasn’t even there! Now, I suppose I could say that since they were so focused on each other, the audience wasn’t in on the joke. I didn’t feel that way at all – I figured out quickly what was going on, and rode the wave they were riding.
Does this make Clay unprofessional by doing this? IMO, no. Instead, it gives the show a feeling of spontaneity. Every show can’t be the same every evening, and if they want to have fun, I have no problem with it. Clay can do what he wants…I guess I’m just easy that way.
One other thing…I read several reports from fans that did enjoy the show greatly, because he sounded incredible. I also read several reports about audience members that hadn’t seen Clay since AI, or hadn’t seen him at all…who came away as new fans because of his Wolf Trap performance.
Clay’s glorious voice, his stage presence, his humor – these are what will win over new fans. And I’m willing to bet that they wouldn’t let a little ice stand in their way.
Just over a week until I get to see Clay for the first time! EEEEEEEE!
