Review from Entertainment Geekly:
Aiken's Sophomore CD Arrives 'Perfection' lives up to it's name. by Ima Gonnathud
Clay Aiken Perfection (RCA)
After a pre-selected debut album and a holiday follow-up, the world is finally about to hear what Clay Aiken is all about. Are you scared? You shouldn't be. Here is a track-by-track review of Perfection.
Back For More Krispy Kremes - What can I say? This is simply the best song ever dedicated to a breakfast food. Catchy tune, great hook, and lyrics everyone can relate to. Except diabatics. And people on Weight Watchers. Somebody slip a copy of this under Jenny Craig's pillow and lets start a pool on how soon before she's driving around town looking for a HOT FRESH DONUTS sign. Clay obviously feels strongly about this song, and it comes through in his amazing vocals.
QUITE Soon Isn't Soon Enough - I've been told Clay had been slipping clues into his blog at his Official Fan Club, and the fans completely misinterpreted them. Little did they know his reference to CD news coming QUITE soon was really a song title. That Clay, always the prankster. The track itself is passionate and intense. I want to listen to it again. QUITE soon. With Clay's supurb vocals, that's not soon enough.
Do You Love Me (Now That I Can Dance Like Elvis) - Fun, fun, fun! This song could single-handedly inspire a retro 50's rock revival akin to the swing craze still being enjoyed by artists such as Michael Buble and Big Bad Voodoo Daddy. Fantastic old time rock and roll beat with surprisingly good baritone vocals from Clay. Get out your saddle oxfords and twist along with what I can only hope will be an Top Ten video on MTV. This unique style is a great showcase for Clay's voice.
Tears Run Dry When You Flash My Eyes - Somewhat surprisingly, this song isn't about a recent trip to Mardi Gras, but rather the betrayal of a loved one and a sensitivity to light. Pissy Angsty Clay is back in this little ditty, and I, for one, am not complaining. To get in the proper mood, Clay spent the entire recording session in complete darkness, save for a single candle-shaped flashlight. It must have really done the trick for him, as his lyrical delivery is truly inspired.
Compromise (The Ballad of Clive) - Ecclectic and unusual is the only way to describe this one. In a fashion made most famous by Bohemian Rhapsody, this song mixes several musical genres with great success. It begins as edgy rock song, then travels the musical spectrum, including such styles as green-eyed soul, gospel and even something like Motown's famous "wall of sound." Don't think I'm crazy, but I swear I heard a little Mongolian Polka in the bridge. Clay sounds amazing and the variety really showcases his amazing vocal abilities.
Love Of My Life - From the title I was expecting the Queen song of the same name, but instead I found a lovely ballad with well-written, though somewhat ambiguous lyrics. It's either a beautiful song about his soulmate, or a love song to striped socks. Either way, Love Of My Life has a soft, lilting melody that really showcases Clay's voice.
1000 Days Since My Last Blog - This is the song your grandparents just won't understand, kiddies. Though with the power of the vocals, they might not care. Killer guitar riffs and inspired lyrics turn this powerful ballad into something special. You can actually hear the torment in Clay's voice as he begs his readers forgivness for his paltry communication skills. Waiting home for the phone to ring is so twentieth century. Clay's voice really shines in this very cutting-edge number.
I'm Not A Diet Coke - An insprational song of self-acceptance written in a fun and entertainging way. My toe was tapping along as I listened to Clay convince me that I shouldn't feel pressured to be a Diet Coke and it's OK to be a Christmas tree. Teens especially will appreciate this anti-peer-pressure anthem. If Clay's uplifting vocals can't convince you, nothing will.
Just You (And Kristy And Patricia And Sweater Girl...) - Good ol' love-'em-and-leave'em Clay. Who knew he was such a heartbreaker? This ballad has a beautiful melody that tugs at your heart while he sings of his devotion to Just You. Then an unexpected curveball when the next verse is dedicated to someone named Kristy! Yup, Playboy that he is, Clay's got a whole string of lovelies lined up, each one believing they are THE one. Didn't their mamas ever teach them not to trust men who can sing like that? A stellar vehicle for Clay's voice.
Lots Of Covers - When Entertainment Geekly reported months ago that Clay was listening to "lots of covers" we had no idea it was a song title. A sad, lonely song about losing a lover and how many blankets are now needed in bed to make up for the missing body heat. The soulful, longing vocals will tear your heart out. An amazing showcase for Clay's voice.
Fresh Laundry - An obvious follow-up to Lots Of Covers, Fresh Laundry is upbeat and has a killer hook. DJs will be beseiged with calls requesting this post-breakup, getting-on-with-your-life number. The edgy pop/rock vibe is a perfect match for Clay's sensational voice.
Glory - Clay loves to do two things: surprise people and show off those lungs of his. This song, if you can really call it a song, is one long 3 minute powerhouse glory note. Strong and stready, he mixes it up with no less than fourteen key changes. It will bring you to tears and wipe the floor with you. A stunning showcase of Clay's voice.
Phone Book - 2006 Greater Cincinnati Telephone Directory, Listings A-B. The full phone book will be available in a Limited Edition 27 disk set available at his concerts or by visiting the website www.iloveeverthingthatcomesoutofclaysmouth.com. Sources say he had orginally recorded the 2005 phone book, but when the release date was pushed back to spring 2006 he had to return to the studio for the entire month of March to record the updated lyrics. Will we ever hear the unreleased 2005 recording? A
