NYC day 2,Staton Island Ferry,Sardis,Grease.
05/01/08Day 2,the last day of my NYC trip included a ride on the Staton Island Ferry,Sardis for lunch,an encounter with the Naked Cowboy and seeing the broadway musical Grease.
March 29th was our last day in NYC. We slept in .(Until 900 am. ) that is. We had to pack in as much sight seeing as possible before going to Grease that evening. So we (JK and I) woke up the sleeping teenager and we left the hotel around 9:30A.M. for the train station. First on todays agenda was take a Ferry Ride. We took the 7 to the 1 train and only had to ask once for directions. As we were riding the 1 train to South Ferry it stopped at certain point and and we were all told to move to the 1st 5 cars if we wanted to continue to our destination. As we reboarded the train the conducter is telling us we are sitting on top of ground 0.,and that part of the subway has not been rebuilt yet! He also said that on that day nonone got hurt in the subway system.AMAZING.
STATON ISLAND FERRY
We arrived for our ferry ride around 10:30a.m. The ride was nice. I took
pictures of the Statue of Liberty on the way to Staton Island and Pictures of the NYC skyline on the way back. Here are some pics from the ferry ride

We then left the ferry ride got back on the 1 train and headed to Sardis for lunch. It was around 1 when we arrived and I asked if we would be able to get in. The host took my name and said to come back in 45min,but check back at 1:30. so we headed down the street souvenir shopping. On the way we saw the Naked cowboy. JK decided to have her picture taken with him. Nikki was suppose to take the pic but chickened out so I had to take it.
We then headed back to Sardis for lunch at l:30. I deciced to go there since I had been hearing about
it from this web site and other people. We all orded Club Sandwiches which were Huge! One could
of fed all 3 of us.

! After Lunch we had so many left overs we decide to take them back to the hotel. Our plans were to rest up again then come back a little early for Grease to do some shopping. We get to the subway station and an announcement is being made. Due to a 7 train(our line to the hotel) being stuck on the tracks all 7 trains are being held at the station. After 15 min. I decide to call the hotel,I put the number in my cell phone this time. There is no signal from inside the subway station so I get ready to use the pay phone that just happens to be there on the platform. As Im looking for change the disabled train rolls In. 5 minutes later the 7 line is running limited service. This is good except it now doesnt go all the way to the stop at our hotel. We get on the train heading towards are hotel and an annoucement is made ,we have to get off at 61st ,st in queens cross the platform and ride back towards Manhattan to get to our stop.Whew! As a result of this we didnt get back to the hotel until almost 5p.m. I decided to ask the desk clerk about the best way to get back for Grease that evening, because when we got off at our stop the entrance styles were roped off!. After a discussion with the clerk and a call to NYC subways, its determined we can ride into manhattan with no problem. We will have to come back the sameway we just did. He then gave me a Subway Map! I could have used that the day before. I dediced to keep it as souvenir since I now knew where I was going!
6:00PM ,we headed back into Manhattan for Grease. This time we didnt encounter any problems.
Grease
My second reason for going on this trip was to see Max Crum and Laura Osnes
starring as
Danny and Sandy in Grease. We arrived about 7:00P.M. at the Brooks-Atkins Theater. The doors
dont open until 7:30 so we take a few more pictures outside.
Poster of Laura and Max as Danny and Sandy.
We enter the theater and are given are playbills. There is an insert in the play bill of a number of cast changes for this night. Luckily Laura and Max the two people we came to see were there. We enjoyed the show. It has a couple different songs for the theater version and a slightly different twist on the ending then the movie version. Although I enjoyed the show. I enjoyed Spamalot a lot more, and not just because Clay was in it. It was a faster moving show and Im glad we saw it on day 1 because if we had went to Grease first as tired as we were on day 1 I probably would have fallen asleep. They took up a collection for Broadway Cares on our way out of the Theater.
After the show we thought we might do some more shopping. Except souvenir shops most every thing else was closed, so we visited 3 of those then went back to the hotel. Sunday Morning I got directions out of New York from the hotel desk clerk to I-95 south I told Nikki she had to ride up front with me to help with the directions and JK had to sit in the back. The directions are going well, Attention just has to be kept on them. JK says something about something in the back. I yelled at her because I want full concentration on the directions ahead and dont want to get lost! Its hard nagivating the city!. We make it out ok and onto I-95, at which time I tell my friends they can talk now.Whew! We stop for gas on the New Jersey Turnpike, and a break. When we come out of the station I notice that a hubcap is missing off my car. There was a scene in Grease where the T-birds were stealing hubcaps. I Jokingly say,"Do you suppose one of those guys from Grease took my hubcab?" I think it just fell off somewhere along the road. Who takes just one hubcab?
On the ride back to SC we stopped off in the Washington D.C. area/Northern Va. where a friend of mine lives.
We stayed about half an hour then headed back out arriving back in SC around midnight.
The Touring companying of Spamalot was appearing at the Peace Center the day after I arrived home and the song "Always look on the bright side of life" was on with the comercial every time I turned the t.v. on.
