This past week

05/27/08

This past week was so hectic. For those that don't already know, my 94 year old great great aunt is staying with us.

Last Monday I was afraid that my aunt had suffered a stroke because she couldn't sit up straight. All she would do is lean over her tray table. She lost all upper body strength. So I called my mom and work and told her to come home and help me assess the situation. She was still able to talk and she retained her fine motor skills, but something wasn’t right.

On Tuesday, things were still the same so we took her to the hospital. They admitted her that night. The hospital didn’t really have any room for my family or myself to stay with her that night. My mom had to work a double shift the next morning, so my sister and I got up early the next morning to visit her. We wanted her to see a familiar when she woke up. We later on found out my aunt didn’t have a stroke, but pneumonia and a UTI (Urinary Tract Infection). The doctor told us that, in patients her age (she’s 94) little things like colds or infections exhibit stroke symptoms. My sister and I stayed with her until that evening. My dad came to the hospital from work to relieve us.

On Thursday I had to take a five-hour glucose tolerance test. I had to drink this stuff!http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v343/divagurlasha/0512081149.jpg! And get pricked every hour for five hours.

My aunt was discharged on Friday night.

Saturday I had a hair and nair appointment.

Sunday was cleaning day for our family.

After having to undergo the five-hour glucose test my doctor called me this morning to tell me that yes, I do in fact have diabetes. This didn’t really come as a surprise to me seeing as diabetes runs in both sides of my family. I’m not really scared or angry because I kind of saw it coming. The only thing I really don’t like is the fact that I have to cut all sugar out of my diet.

The only thing that I am confused about is my doctor said that I have low sugar and to avoid sweets. According to one of my med books, the prefix ‘hypo’ means “low”. So logically I would think if I were hypoglycemic then I would need sugar to bring my glucose levels to normal.

I would understand the avoiding sugar if I was hyperglycemic. My doctor did also mention that my form of diabetes is uncommon. He caught me off guard so I didn’t get a chance to bombard him with questions.

Well there you have it, my week.
