THE LUCKY, LITTLE RABBIT

07/08/09

.

There was once a little rabbit who leaped, played, and chased his siblings all around the yard, enjoying life to the fullest. Then something happened to the little rabbit, which will change his life forever. He will no longer feel so safe and secure chasing through the grass, for the little rabbit lived through a harrowing experience, and though he did survive, I doubt he will forget his traumatic attack.

I was sitting out with my husband, when I heard a loud commotion coming from the back of the neighbors field. It sounded like 4 or 5 blue jays, squawking, and yelling. I knew something wasn't right, so I jumped up and ran toward the noise, as fast as I could. I was just in time to scare off a very huge bird, which at the time, I believed to be a hawk. It wasn't until he landed in a tree at the far end of the field, that I realized it was a large owl. I assumed he was after a baby blue jay, but when I looked at the ground, I saw a rabbit lying there on it's side. I at first thought it was dead, but taking a closer look, I saw he was still breathing. Not knowing what to do, I just watched him for a while. Slowly he raised his head, and then managed to get to his feet. He was wobbly, but he finally took off, and much to my relief, seemed to be okay. I saw him a little later, sitting under a bush, and not in a very playful mood at all.

It was a hard lesson for him to learn. He now knows that the world is not as safe as it first appeared to be. May he not ever forget it!

This did not happen to a tiny, baby rabbit. It was about the size of the one pictured above.....very close to full grown. Let me tell you, it was one, big owl.

Hugs to you all
