The Money Making Venture

10/26/09

I guess it worked out for all involved.....

Yesterday, beautiful day here in Northern NJ. So with that .. Cooperstown 2010 had it's "Gargage Sale".

Husband the treasurer doned a bright yellow shirt that said " Cooperstown or Bust" and played cashier for hours. Older son wore his town jersey along with the other team members and in between throwing pine cones and pine needles at each other, going across the street to Friendly's restaurant and somehow just disappearing they carried crap to people's cars.

We were supposed to work in 2 hour shifts but ended up staying for all but a half hour of the fun. This is where it get's crazy... see this portion of the "FUN'draising was actually fun. Yes, I admit it ... it was fun. As they were bringing all the crap to the sale I spotted a wonderful couch and loveseat. ( It was in another parent's house and they redecorated and had it stored in their basement). Well, the man cave needed some new furniture but it was clearly not in the budget. It has flowers on it ... but the men who use the man cave don't care. The color, size, condition was perfect and before it really had time to settle into the parking lot ... it had a sold sign on it and husband who was manning the cash table had not even sat on it. MINE.... MINE... MINE !! For a great bargain price I might add. Thru out the crap sale people ignored the "SOLD" sign and tried to buy "MY" couch and loveseat... I made it known to all the other parent's it was "MINE". ( Much to their amusement... that's okay I can dish it out and take it). The problem is beside the furniture I came home with a lamp ( looks great in the bedroom) . 2 books that Older son hasn't read yet. ( He's an American LIt freak - classics all the way). 6 Christmas candles that you put in the window during the holidays but my house is country decorated so I keep them up all year. ( Husband turns them off - I turned them on.... but that is another blog). I still got rid of more crap than the crap that came home with me... we are sitting on the furniture, reading by the light and the house looks cozy and welcoming with the candles. The books are still sitting in older son's room but I know he will read them.. he has another book report coming up.

Back to the sale.... people donated a bunch of toys that were not even opened. A lady that works in the school library bought a bunch for kids in town who otherwise won't have any presents during the holidays. I had been watching for things and the pile just kept getting bigger and bigger. Now Cooperstown is making money so ( don't tell ) I lowered the prices and she bought all the unopened stuff. Our kid's won't suffer one little bit because I lowerd the price and besides it made me happy !! I made up for it because other people bought crap and paid full price. The best part? At the end of the sale we found 4 bags of stuff that people donated and were overlooked and never unpacked. Had a whole bunch of stuff that was never opened and I delivered that to the library lady today..... she was thrilled.

I know I have complained about " playing nice with others" and believe me I still "don't want to play" with most of these people... but some of them turned out to be pretty okay. One of them I am convinced is nuts and needs to be sedated..... but I will steer clear of her.

They wanted an approximate count for how many wreaths we sold... so far I sold 6. I am going for the under achiever award. I have done even better with the cheesecake... I sold NONE !! I know that I am going to get slack for that.. ( the cheesecake idea came from the one that needs to be sedated).

In the end Cooperstown 2010 made about $1500.00, the Red Cross ended up with some stuff, kids will have a Christmas ( due to price lowering and plain genorosity) and the local thrift store has some new inventory - a WIN - WIN situation. Don't you agree?

Now - they have planned another "FUN'draising meeting for next Monday. These meetings I assure you are not "FUN" and make my colon knot. So not a good thing when you have "issues" anyway. This is why God made anti-anxiety medication and I am the lucky person who has a bottle to help me "play" nice.

Thanks for reading and I will keep you updated on all the "FUN"draising. After all you are taking this "FUN"draising journey with me.

Now if you will excuse me... I need to go sit on the couch, turn on the lamp and candles......

Did I mention that the garbage man has the exercise machine that I purchased from QVC.... no one at the crap sale wanted that ......

God Bless,

Barb
