Now I ask you, does the name "Cindy" sound threatening? Dangerous? Even mildly intimidating? I picture "Cindy" as someone who would be perky and bubbly. Like a cheerleader.
So when our local newscasters were trying to get our attention and heed their warnings with respect to Tropical Storm Cindy, it was difficult for me not to keep seeing pom poms. Luckily, Cindy just threw a pep rally here and didn't bring the whole marching band so we only have to clean up the confetti and streamers left behind.
However, her brother Dennis is hot on her trail. And he sounds like a big bully. Him, I find indimidating. He is big and brawney and full of hot air. I suspect he's on steroids and getting bigger and fueled with roid rage. Dennis bears watching. He's bad news.
For comparison purposes, let's take the name "Clay." The name Clay sounds happy and exciting. You can't say the name "Clay" without smiling unless you try very hard to stop your mouth from stretching properly for the long a. It rhymes with the words "pay", "lay" "play", and "obey." (It also rhymes with "hay", "day", "way", "say" and "tray", but those don't support my argument so we're going to ignore those.)
Ordinarily one wouldn't say the word "obey" is a happy word, but if you juxtapose it alongside the words "lay" and "play" I'm sure you'll see my point.
So what's in a name? Is it true that a rose by any other name would smell as sweet? Well yeah, so nevermind.
