07/12/05 5 CommentsIf a tree falls in a woods...
Yesterday, my oldest daughter went to the doctor for acute otis media (inner ear infection). She was unable to hear from her left ear and that concerned her greatly. After explaining the physiology of the ear and how it relates to hearing we talked about Helen Keller, for she had just read about her in school. We talked about people who are born deaf and those who loose their hearing from an accident or an illness. Those who loose their hearing have had the experience of verbal communication at some point in their life. She asked..."Can a deaf person hear themselves talk"? I said no, they can't "hear" anything. Then she asked-
"Can a deaf person hear themself think"?
Well, if they've experienced verbal communication, they probably can still "hear" themselves think. But what if they never had any auditory sensation? How do they "talk to themself"? What "words" do they use? Do they even use "words" per se?
Thoughts?
