3/15/08 - Spamalot !!
My friend Jill and I got into NYC around 12:30 - 1pm. We walked around for a while trying to find the Shubert Theatre.. finally we found it and there was a massive line just outside the place for all of the people waiting to see the show! We got in line and waited. It took a while, so as Jill was waiting in line, I took some pictures of the outside of the place. We finally reached the lobby area around 1:45 and decided to get our shirts, programs and stuff like that then instead of after because we knew it would be busy after the show. We were very lucky that we had 2nd row seats.. I saw how close the front row was to the stage, and that was just too close. The show started right on time (2pm). Clay’s first role was the Guard in the Tower.. gosh he was spot on with the accent "are you saying that coconuts migrate?" next up was his "bring out your dead" guy, and I’ve always loved that song so I knew that he would just fit right in, and he did! (It was so hard not to sing along to that song) I read some other people’s reviews of Spamalot, but after a while all of the reviews sounded exactly the same. I did read that his facial expressions made the show, and you know what.., they were totally right! He was just absolutely hilarious with the expressions!! Oh and the one part where the newly Knighted Knights get on there horses to go and search for the Grail... OMG, Clay riding his horse in slow mo (I just about passed out) that was so HOT! I watched him the whole time, I know he said to not just focus on him, but when you are doing gestures like that right in front of me, there is just no way I was going to look at anyone else
The Knights of Ni did there nightly improv, this time it was about Eliot Spitzer and the whole prositute thing. Everyone was laughing about that for at least 4 minutes There was one point where even King Arthur almost lost it and started to laugh! But the one thing that absolutely amazed me the most was that Clay was just standing there with a serious face the whole time, I don’t know how the heck he did that, but I was just blown away with him keeping his composure His big solo song "You Won’t Succeed on Broadway" was amazing, I loved it.. and once again his facial expressions totally made it that much better!! Oh and when he went over to play the piano he lifted up his tunic ALL THE WAY! Oh he’s got a great butt! He played chopsticks on the piano, now I’m not sure if he does that every night or not, but I thought it was cute. His take on the Drunken Guard was hilarious.. and when Lancelot kills him, he was laying on the floor pretty much right infront of me. Finally Brother Maynard came out, bald on top and all... talking about the Holy Hand Grenade. I must say that I liked his Sir Robin character the best.. even if he did soil his pants three times during the show
Oh and we saw him getting into his SUV after the show, I’m guessing that it was to go and work on the cd.. woo hoo!! .. He was wearing jeans with a black hoodie and a jacket over that. He had the hood up, you know trying to be all incognito about it.. it was just the cutest thing ever!
