So my last blog caused some... um... interesting reactions.
I wanted to clarify a few things, and then look at things from another perspective. Can't hurt to go back after a week's time and take another look at things from the other side of the realm of possibilities.
I stand by my belief that the "lots of covers" statement was in EW for a reason.
I stand by my belief that if they are doing "lots of covers", that the material that Clay/JFL presented to RCA was probably nixed, in whole or in part.
As for the rest, I wrote a story of conjecture based on my 2 assumptions above, and based on my emotions at the time. Even with the same assumptions as above, there are different ways to look at it. My first response to lots of covers and love songs personally wasn't great. It wasn't what I wanted to hear. I admit that. I really want kick-butt original music. I want Clay to be HEARD. However, I do not know what direction the CD is taking and I do not know what demographic RCA is going after. Yes, the male pop field has been decimated in the past year. Doesn't mean RCA won't be willing to give it a try. Yes, Clay said something about Love Songs, but maybe it wasn't a hint. Maybe Clay submitted material and it wasn't great (I think I said in a CH post early on.... if the whole CD was like 1000 days and Just You, I'd be glad to hear it was dumped). Maybe all the assumptions are true, but path there and the path back are not what my first and worst fears were.
Let's try something different. Let's take a Zen approach to this. The end result is that at this point, all we can do is wait and see.
First off, the real problem here is that Clay is so talented and versatile. He could make 5 albums simultaneously, all in different genres or formats, and all 5 would be awesome. He is that good. Maybe RCA realizes that? Maybe it's a crapshoot as to which direction they'll go, because any of them could be successful?
Maybe the search for original material didn't turn up the greatest stuff. Who knows.
Maybe RCA can actually get creative with covers. Except for a few songs, every cover that Clay has sung has blown away the original.
Maybe if they tossed most of his work from last year, maybe Clay can learn from it. Maybe RCA will actually come through for him.
Clay is under contract to RCA. When it comes down to it, the decisions are in their hands. Maybe they'll actually come through. Maybe they'll do right by Clay.
Yeah, is it likely? Is it overly optimistic? I don't know. But it is another perspective. Same assumptions, different conclusions. But I think over the past week, the fandom has let itself be heard. Or at least vented into the wind. And there is nothing wrong with that.
I'm pretty sure that whatever Clay puts out for his CD, some people will love it, and some will not. Some will love it because they'll love anything he does. Some will love it because it really connects to them. Some will love it because it is undeniably great. Some will hate it because it isn't what they expect. Some will hate it because it doesn't match what they want. Some have decided already that they will hate it... just because.
For now, I'm going to just accept that it will be whatever it will be. I know and believe that no matter what, TALENT will win out. Clay's talent is undeniable, and that will win. I do not know if the style, the format, or whatever they decide to do with it will be what I hoped for, but at this point, I just want Clay singing. Again and Again and Again.
