Clay's Blog

07/10/05 4 CommentsI joined a fanclub?!
Woke up this morning, deciding that I needed to eat something healthy after a weekend of junk so I threw a few berries and soymilk into the blender to make a smoothie. I threw some day old coffee into the microwave, fed the dog, then made my way over to the couch to settle in for a relaxing Sunday morning catching up on the happenings at Clay's Oh-ficial site, and elsewhere on the laptop.
As I am sitting here I am looking over to the table where the Fan Club package is sitting where I left it after opening it yesterday. I still can't believe I actually joined a fan club. I have never really been a fan I suppose. I somehow resisted being sucked in during the Michael Jackson craze of my pre-teens, and the New Kids on the Block (squeeeeee they are so cute..blech) madness during my teens. My friends had to know all the information about these groups. For Michael Jackson wearing his buttons on your jean jacket was all the rage, the more the better, NKOTB brought about t-shirts, book covers, sleeping bags, and pillows. My friends would spend all afternoon watching MTV waiting for a video to be on, and squealing when it came on like they had never seen it before. I just didn’t get what all the hype was about. After all it was just music.
Several years ago I dated a guy who was a huge fan boy of some groups. He even joined (gasp!) fan clubs, and would travel to see the same concert more than once. He knew about when his favorite groups were touring, would follow their websites and knew what Cd's the groups were working on, what type of sounds/collaborations were being thought of, and when they were touring well in advance to ticket sales. He tried to explain it to me but I still didn't get it, and I really thought it was a bit silly still.
Fast Forward a few more years I have now been following a singers career (hope I can say artist one day), for well over 2 years. I know the name of Clay’s dog, his charity work, and could probably give you a detailed history of the hair colors and cuts complete with annotated notes. The only thing I really don't know yet is much about his music, still hoping and waiting.
Who am I? When I review some of my actions, I don't recognize myself, and I still don't really understand it. I have Oh-ficially joined a freakin' fan club. The t-shirt and photo is proof staring back of me. The ride has been fun. I have made friends and learned a lot about many topics along the way. Maybe I really don't need to understand it. Just enjoy the ride.
Off to add t-shirt, letter, and photo to the can't deny my fandom box.
