My job was “outsourced” 3 years ago. I moved to a small town 5 years ago when I had a job working out of my home so it didn’t matter where I lived. My sister lives in this area so she and I also persuaded our elderly parents to sell their house and move here as well. It’s truly been a terrific move for them. The health care is much better and they are out of the smog of a large city. Their house is handicapped accessible and so easy for them to function in. I have always believed that life works out the way it’s supposed to so when the move to this area went so smoothly I thought the decision was proven to be the right one. Unfortunately, it hasn’t gone that well for me. Funny, I wasn’t that worried about my job of 17 years ending. After all, I am not the first or the last person to experience losing a job. I also know bad things happen to good people every single day and since I can only claim to be mediocre at best, why should I expect to have things to go my way all of the time? I have a college degree, a wealth of experience and training with a formerly excellent company and I would be a bargain for any company since I am willing to work for so much less, right? Unfortunately, I am also over 50 years old. I have begun to believe that “overqualified” is a synonym for too old. Everything I have saved my whole life is virtually gone, I have no wealthy relatives to help out since my poor darling parents live on a fixed income. I found a job last summer and thought my prayers had been answered but as soon as the busy season was at an end, so was the job. I interviewed for another job yesterday that doesn’t pay enough to cover my house payment but I am praying that they hire me because it will at least be some money coming in. I am now at the end of my money and time is quickly running out. While everyone else is posting excitedly about the upcoming tour, all I can think about is not only will there be no tour dates for me this time, I will probably be losing my house and living under a bridge by the time the tour starts. It’s funny, I’m not asking to win the lottery, I don’t want anyone to take care of me. I like to work and I’m very independent – all I’m asking for is a job and a chance to work hard so I can take care of myself (and go to a concert or two g). I am so scared and I absolutely hate being scared and jealous and envious of other people all at the same time.
